Battlefield is, without a doubt, one of the largest game franchises of our time. However, the last few game titles didn’t perform as expected, which lead to the loss of many featured mechanics and gameplay changes. Luckily, Battlefield 2042 looks very promising, using many good aspects of the franchise, and will also introduce even more.
Battlefield 2042 will feature Crossplay and Cross-progression. Crossplay will work between PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series consoles. Playstation 4 and Xbox One players can also play via cross-play with each other, but only in isolation from the other platforms.
Crossplay will be optional, so every player can choose to activate or deactivate it. But, the activation or deactivation will not let players choose which platform they play against.
Last Gen Consoles will also only support 64 players and smaller maps, compared to the 128 players and standard maps on PC, PS5, and Xbox. These limitations are set by EA because of the technical limitations of the older platforms.
DICE says it will test out cross-play functionality during the official playtest of BF2042. However, they had to delay the PS5 test due to “a critical issue” related to the game build. Still, invites for registered Xbox players are going out now.
Please note that EA and DICE may change some cross-play relevant features, as the game releases on the 22nd of October, 2021.
Can PS4 and PS5 play Battlefield 2042 together?
Because of the technical limitations, PS4 and PS5 players will not be able to play Battlefield 2042 together. EA and DICE have explained that Battlefield 2042’s cross-play will only support consoles of the same generation.
However, if you switch from PS4 to Xbox or PC, your progression will carry over onto the Xbox or PC version, and vice versa. That is an excellent feature because it takes hours of playtime to unlock all the weapons, attachments, and more.
