After a shadowdrop, Teslagrad Remastered has been released on PlayStation 5. Teslagrad was originally released back in 2013 on PC, followed by a Nintendo Wii U port in 2013, and PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita versions in 2014. It’s now 2023, and we’re getting a revamped take on the beloved 2D Metroidvania platforming journey with updated graphics and lighting, improved animation, some reworked and rebalanced areas here and there, remastered audio, as well as 10 additional challenge levels to expand your adventure.

The Kingdom of Elektropia is under the rule of an evil, tyrant king. You play as a young boy who, for some reason, is being hunted down by his minions. The only way to escape is to run as fast as possible to seek refuge at the Tesla Tower. This location was once the home of a group of tech wizards known as Teslamancers, and it’s thanks to the tools left behind by them that you’ll be able to survive.

It’s because of electricity and magnetism that you’ll be able to solve the many puzzles on your path and take on the different bosses blocking your path. Blue and red colors will let you know what particular charge a contraption has, and how you can us it to your advantage as you collect more tools. You’ll first get your hands on the magnet glove, which allows you to punch your way through obstacles by, well, punching at them to change their polarity. Objects with the same charge will repel each other, while those with opposite charges will attract.

The game will kindly show you what each new tool can do as soon as you gain access to it, and it does a great job of teaching you the basics as you go, as to not overwhelm you. The game has a good difficulty curve, and you’ll learn more and more about how to do things by completing the many puzzles you’ll run into along the way. Teslagrad Remastered is very easy to play, and once a new tool is obtained, subsequent puzzles will take it into consideration. Sure, there are some rooms that dial up the challenge, but they’re not going to end up being a dealbreaker. The good news is that completing these segments will usually reward you with a collectible.

How will you play through Teslagrad? You’ll control the boy with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the X button as needed. Once you start to use the magnet glove, you’ll be able to charge objects with a blue or red polarity by using the L1 and R1 buttons. Gain the blink ability, and the boy will be able to blink over a short distance by pressing the Square button. And once you obtain the magnetic cloak, you’ll be able to apply a blue or red charge to yourself, which works for some very fun platforming action.

Teslagrad Remastered has the same trophy list as Teslagrad did all those years ago, which means that you’ll be working on adding a Platinum trophy to your collection by way of a list that is focused entirely on finding all of the collectibles in the game. And since Teslagrad Remastered is a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5, you can work on getting the separate Platinum trophies for the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. I had a lot of fun playing Teslagrad on the Nintendo Wii U in 2014, and was more than eager to take it for another spin on the Nintendo Switch in 2017, since it’s a solid 2D Metroidvania puzzle platforming experience. Teslagrad Remastered now brings us the definitive version on PlayStation, with updated graphics and lighting, improved animation, some reworked and rebalanced areas here and there, remastered audio, along with 10 bonus challenge levels.
