Meg’s Monster from Odencat is a short and charming story-driven JRPG on Nintendo Switch. You’ll get a chance to experience life in the Underworld as monster Roy. In the Underworld, monsters love to eat humans for breakfast. Roy has no interest in doing that since all he needs to survive is some delicious Magic Tar. This makes it very interesting when he gets to, along with his friend Golan, meet Meg, a young girl that is lost and scared.

It is then that we get to learn the big twist in Meg’s Monster: if she starts to cry, the sky turns red, and the whole planet begins to tremble. That means that if Meg ends up wailing away, the apocalypse will destroy the world! You must, therefore, do whatever it takes to find her mom so that you can reunite them before it’s too late. Unfortunately, other monsters – and humans – are not aware of this and will stand in your way, trying to bring you down to take Meg away.

Roy is a huge and powerful monster, and he’s pretty much invulnerable. He’s got a mighty 99,999 HP, so he can certainly take on anything that the Underworld throws at him. The issue is that whenever Roy is attacked, Meg takes emotional and mental damage. She’s a young girl who doesn’t want to see Roy get hurt, hence her suffering. If her mental gauge reaches zero, then she’ll start to fully cry, and that will be the end of the world.

You’ll have to balance attacking with Roy and guarding along with keeping Meg happy by using weird human items known as toys. These are used in the human world to keep kids happy and are going to be a must during your time with Meg’s Monster. The first one you’ll find will be a toy rocket ship. It’s something that goes FWOOSH and can fly up into outer space. Just use the Toys command when in a battle to use an item to refill Meg’s mental gauge.

Every now and then, enemies will unleash an attack that is more powerful than their usual attacks. Oftentimes, they’re signaled one turn in advance. This will give you a chance to prepare for it by using the Guard command. What Guard will do is lower the damage that Roy receives, which will, in turn, lower how many points are lost for Meg’s mental gauge. Combining Guard with using the Toys command at the right time will allow you to carry on with your quest.

While Roy has a ton of HP and won’t need much help surviving a flurry of attacks, his other stats could always use an extra boost. As Roy levels up, his attack power and defense rating will also increase, which will make it easier – and faster – to complete each turn-based battle. Meg will also level up as you progress through the game, which will increase her mental gauge total.

Leveling up will also allow Roy to gain access to more powerful special attacks. To balance things out, you won’t be able to use them at all times since they will have an SP cost associated with them. You’ll regain one SP point for each turn that you don’t use an attack that has an SP cost. This adds an extra strategy element to battles since you’ll have to balance attacking, guarding, using a special attack, using a toy to recover some of Meg’s mental gauge, or using one of the special commands for some battles.

When visiting the Underworld map, along with moving to the destinations marked with a red exclamation mark that will help to move the story forward, you’ll also notice some spots will have a green exclamation mark. These are optional objectives that will allow you to experience additional story segments. If you want to see everything that the game has to offer, be sure to check all optional objectives as they become available because if you carry onward with the story, you might not be able to go back and check on some of them.

Meg’s Monster is a short and charming story-driven JRPG that is worth checking out on Nintendo Switch. It’s not a long one, but it does offer an interesting story and premise, fun gameplay mechanics, a great pixel art style, and a soundtrack that does a great job of complementing everything.
