7 Days to End with You from PLAYISM and Lizardry is an interesting and charming story-driven experience on Nintendo Switch. You are an observer of the story that takes place in 7 Days to End with You and are free to perceive and interpret the meaning of the words you read. The relationship between the two characters you’ll observe is built on the words that you interpret, so even though you’re billed as an observer, the choices that you make will matter! One of the characters is a woman that you will be able to see on the screen, while the other one is an unnamed character.

That second character wakes up to find the aforementioned woman speaking in a language that is hard to understand. Pay attention to what she’s saying, and try to decipher the meaning of each word so that you can build the story of the two characters. The world around them will also change based on how you interpret each word, so the way in which the story develops will be up to you!

Because of this, there is more than one way in which the story can unravel, and there is no right or wrong way to interpret the words. You might not get the whole gist of the game’s story during your first run, which is why you can use your knowledge from previous runs to change how things develop during your second – or third! – go at it. As the game says at the start, “This is a short and long story of only seven days.”

You’ll play this one with the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you move a hand-shaped cursor around the screen. The A button can then be used to click on specific words, as well as to move the dialogue forward. All of the words that you’ve run into will be added to a list, which you can review by pressing the X button. By reviewing said list, you’ll be able to enter the meaning that you manage to interpret for each word. Pay attention to the female character’s gestures and facial expressions as she speaks to see if you manage to pick up anything that allows you to find out what each word means!

You can also move the cursor around the screen to interact with any objects in your vicinity so that you can hopefully find some clues that will aid you in interpreting the words. Maybe you can click on a calendar and try to make out the words for each day. Or perhaps there are some books on a shelf that can help you link this or that word to their covers? You can also check out when it is that each word was used so that you can remember what the appropriate context is to be able to interpret them.

7 Days to End with You is an interesting and charming story-driven experience. Given its overall gameplay loop, this one is not going to be for everyone since it requires a lot of patience as you take the time needed to find the right interpretation for each word – or as close to right as possible. The game was originally released on steam last year, and its jump to console has brought with it improvements to the localization, new endings, new reactions and expressions for the female character, and a Gallery Mode that unlocks after completing the game. 7 Days to End with You is out on Nintendo Switch with an $11.99 asking price.
